What Is Water-Resistant Fabric?

Water-resistant fabric is standard polyester sportswear fabric that has been treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish or a light PU (Polyurethane) coating. Unlike waterproof fabric, which uses a continuous membrane to block all water, water-resistant fabric relies on a surface treatment that causes light precipitation to bead up and roll off before it can saturate the fibers.

"Water-resistant fabric covers 80% of real-world sportswear weather scenarios — morning dew on the pitch, drizzle during warm-up, light rain on the golf course, mist during a trail run. It costs a fraction of waterproof, breathes like normal polyester, and critically, accepts full sublimation printing. For most brands, water-resistant is the smartest outer layer fabric you can specify."

There is no membrane involved, which means the fabric retains 100% of standard polyester's characteristics: it stretches, it wicks moisture, it breathes at 8,000–12,000 MVTR, and it accepts full sublimation printing. The DWR treatment is applied either before or after sublimation (we use sublimation-compatible DWR that survives 200°C heat), giving you both all-over custom color graphics AND water shedding on the same garment.

Every batch is tested for DWR contact angle, spray test rating (AATCC 22), and wash durability. We guarantee a minimum of 20 wash cycles before DWR performance drops below acceptable thresholds — significantly better than the 3–5 cycle cheap treatments common in the market.

Unlike waterproof or windproof fabric where the membrane/coating adds significant weight, DWR treatment adds essentially zero GSM — a 150 GSM polyester with DWR is still 150 GSM. PU coating adds approximately 5–10 GSM. This means you can specify water-resistant fabric using the exact same GSM targets you use for standard polyester, with no weight penalty for the water-shedding performance.

Quick rule: Need full-color sublimation on an outer layer that sheds drizzle? Go water-resistant — it's the only fabric that does both. Need stretch for active training in cold wind? Go windproof softshell. Facing sustained heavy rain or snow? Go waterproof. For the marketing limitation, we provide accurate terminology guidelines: "water-resistant," "DWR-treated," "sheds light rain" — never "waterproof."
