What Makes Sweatshirt Fabric Different?

Sweatshirt fabric is a category of knitted textile built around one principle: trapping warm air against the body while remaining comfortable enough for all-day wear. Unlike performance sportswear that wicks moisture away, sweatshirt fabric is designed to insulate, drape, and feel substantial.

The two fundamental constructions are French terry (unbrushed loops on the reverse) and fleece (loops brushed into a fuzzy pile). Within these two families, variations in GSM, blend ratio, and finish create the entire spectrum from lightweight spring pullovers to heavyweight winter hoodies.

Thermal Insulation

Our mitigation: For brands needing sublimation, we offer 65/35 and 70/30 poly-cotton French terry with 90% of the terry aesthetic and full sublimation capability. For extreme-cold applications, our sherpa-lined construction adds a fleece layer inside a terry shell. For snag resistance, we offer a brushed-face terry variant that eliminates exposed loops on the exterior.

Cotton-polyester blends are the industry standard. For premium streetwear, 80/20 cotton-poly French terry is the gold standard — it has the softness of cotton with enough polyester for shape retention and shrinkage control. For budget-friendly lines, 60/40 polar fleece delivers warmth at lower cost. For all-over print streetwear, 65/35 poly-cotton terry enables sublimation while maintaining the terry aesthetic. Pure cotton (100%) is an option for natural-positioning brands, but expect 5–8% shrinkage and faster pilling without synthetic content.
It depends on the season and positioning. Lightweight spring/fall: 220–280 GSM — good for layering pieces and mild climates. Standard midweight (most versatile): 280–340 GSM — the sweet spot for year-round hoodies and crew necks. Premium heavyweight: 340–380 GSM — the weight range that commands premium pricing and feels substantial. Ultra-heavy: 380–450 GSM — for winter pieces, sherpa-lined items, and luxury streetwear drops. Below 220 GSM, the fabric feels thin and doesn't deliver the "sweatshirt" experience customers expect.
French terry has unbrushed loops on the inside (similar to a towel surface) and a smooth, flat knit on the outside. It's lighter, more breathable, and has a cleaner, more structured look — preferred for streetwear and transitional weather. Fleece starts as terry but the loops are brushed and sheared to create a fuzzy, insulating pile on the inside. It's warmer, heavier, and has a cozier hand feel — preferred for cold-weather hoodies, sweatpants, and athleisure. Think of terry as "structured comfort" and fleece as "cozy warmth."
Untreated cotton fabrics can shrink 5–8% after the first wash — enough to change a size. We pre-shrink all sweatshirt fabrics using a mechanical compaction process during finishing that compresses the fabric before it's cut. This reduces residual shrinkage to under 3%, which is within international retail tolerance and virtually imperceptible to the wearer. We provide wash-test reports with every production lot confirming lengthwise and widthwise shrinkage measurements. The key: our shrinkage control happens at the fabric level, not the garment level — so it's built in, not an afterthought.
Sherpa is a type of fleece with a thick, curly, textured pile that mimics the appearance and warmth of sheep's wool. It's made by heavily brushing polyester or poly-cotton fleece to create deep, crimped loops that trap large amounts of air — making it significantly warmer than standard fleece at the same GSM. Sherpa is used two ways: as a lining inside a terry or woven shell (most common — sherpa-lined hoodies and jackets) or as the outer fabric itself (sherpa pullovers and jackets). At 350–450 GSM, it's a winter-only fabric. It's also more expensive than standard fleece due to the extra brushing and finishing steps.
Only polyester-rich blends can be sublimated. Standard 80/20 cotton-poly terry has too much cotton for the sublimation dye to bond effectively — you'll get washed-out, dull colors. For sublimation sweatshirts, we recommend 65/35 or 70/30 poly-cotton French terry with a minimum 65% polyester content. The result is vibrant, all-over prints with zero hand feel that won't crack or peel. The trade-off: poly-cotton terry feels slightly less soft than cotton-poly and has a subtly different drape. For most streetwear brands doing all-over print, this trade-off is well worth it.
Brushed fleece is standard fleece that has undergone an additional finishing step: passing the fabric surface through fine wire brushes that raise and soften the fibers, creating an ultra-plush, fuzzy texture. The difference is noticeable — brushed fleece feels significantly softer and smoother against the skin compared to standard fleece. It's the finish that premium hoodie brands use to justify higher price points. The brushing also creates more air-trapping pockets, making brushed fleece slightly warmer than unbrushed fleece at the same GSM. The trade-off: extra brushing adds 8–12% to fabric cost and can marginally increase pilling if not paired with an anti-pill treatment (which we always apply).
Neither pure fiber is ideal alone. 100% cotton sweatshirts are the softest and most breathable but shrink significantly (5–8%), pill faster, lose shape at elbows and cuffs, and absorb moisture like a sponge. 100% polyester sweatshirts are extremely durable, shrink-proof, and fast-drying but feel synthetic, don't breathe well, and can hold odors. The industry solved this with blends: 80/20 cotton-poly is the sweet spot for premium feel with stability, 60/40 adds more durability for workwear and budget lines, and 65/35 poly-cotton enables sublimation. The blend ratio is a dial — more cotton = softer but less stable; more polyester = more durable but less luxurious.
