What Is Rib Knit Fabric?
Rib knit is a construction method — not a material. It refers to any fabric where knit stitches and purl stitches alternate in vertical columns, creating the characteristic raised vertical ridges ("ribs"). This alternating structure produces a fabric that stretches dramatically in the cross-grain direction (perpendicular to the ribs) and then springs back — a property that exists within the structure itself, not from any elastomeric yarn.
We produce rib knit in polyester (virgin and recycled), cotton-polyester blends, and wool blends across 1x1, 2x2, and 2x1 constructions. For sportswear, the vast majority is polyester 1x1 rib with 3–5% spandex — used as cuffs, collars, and waistbands sewn onto jersey or interlock body panels. But we also produce full-body rib garments (rugby shirts, compression base layers, training tops) where the entire garment is cut from rib knit, leveraging its multi-directional stretch and distinctive textured appearance.
A critical property that's often overlooked: rib knit does not curl at cut edges. Jersey knit curls aggressively toward the purl side when cut — requiring binding, hemming, or overlocking. Rib knit lies flat at every cut edge, making it self-finishing. This alone eliminates an entire construction step at cuffs and collars, reducing production time and cost versus using jersey with edge finishing.
How Rib Knit Works
The stretch comes from the structure, not the material — understanding this is key to specifying rib correctly.
Knit Column
V-shaped stitches on the face side. These form the raised ridges you see. In a 1x1 rib, each knit column is one stitch wide.
Purl Column
Horizontal bumps on the reverse side, visible as valleys between the ridges. The alternation of knit and purl creates the zigzag structure.
Stretch Mechanism
When pulled cross-grain, the zigzag straightens — like opening an accordion. When released, the stitch interlocking pulls it back to original width.

Structural Properties
These properties come from the knit structure itself — they exist regardless of the material used.
Cross-Grain Stretch
50–100%+ extension perpendicular to the ribs — built into the structure, not dependent on spandex. Jersey achieves only 15–20% by comparison.
Elastic Recovery
With 3–5% spandex, rib knit recovers 95–98% after thousands of stretch cycles. The structure provides stretch; spandex provides the memory.
No Edge Curling
Rib knit lies perfectly flat at every cut edge — no curling toward either side. This makes it self-finishing for cuffs, collars, and waistbands.
Two-Way Stretch
Unlike jersey (which stretches primarily in the lengthwise direction), rib knit stretches in both directions — cross-grain from the rib structure, lengthwise from the knit loops.
Texture & Grip
The ridged surface creates natural friction — rib cuffs grip wrists and ankles more effectively than smooth jersey. The texture also adds visual and tactile interest.
Insulation Pockets
The three-dimensional rib structure traps air in the valleys between ridges, providing slightly more insulation than flat jersey at the same GSM.
Shape Retention
Rib knit holds its tubular shape when cut into strips — ideal for cuffs and waistbands that need to maintain a circular form without distorting.

- Without spandex, recovery degrades noticeably over time — the structure stretches but doesn't fully spring back
Branding Rib Knit Garments
The ridged surface changes the decoration calculus — some methods work beautifully, others need adaptation.
Screen Printing
The best decoration method for rib knit. Plastisol ink is thick enough to bridge the valleys between ribs and produce a solid, opaque print. Water-based inks can sink into the valleys and appear uneven. For collar and cuff branding (small logos, sponsor names), screen printing on rib gives a clean, professional result. Keep graphics simple and avoid fine detail — the rib texture will soften edges on anything below 2pt line weight.
Sublimation
Works on polyester rib, but the result is fundamentally different from sublimation on jersey. The paper contacts only the raised ribs, not the valleys — producing a heathered, textured print. On 1x1 rib this looks subtle and premium. On 2x2+ rib it looks mottled and imprecise. Full-coverage photo sublimation on wide rib is not recommended. Best use: single-color or simple gradient sublimation on 1x1 rib for full-body rib garments where the texture is part of the design.
Embroidery
Excellent on rib knit — the ridged texture actually complements the stitched look, making embroidery appear more integrated than on smooth jersey. The standard method for polo shirt collars and premium sportswear branding. Use a lightweight cutaway backing to prevent the embroidery from restricting the rib's stretch. For small chest logos on full-body rib garments (rugby shirts), embroidery is the gold standard — it looks intentional on the textured surface, not applied.

Material
Polyester for sublimation compatibility and durability. Cotton-poly for traditional feel. Wool blend for cold-weather. Recycled polyester for sustainability.
Spandex %
3% for light-use trims (collar bands). 5% for standard cuffs and waistbands. 8–12% for compression rib garments.
GSM Target
Typically 20–40 GSM lighter than the body fabric it's paired with. 160 GSM for light cuffs, 200 GSM for standard, 240+ for heavy trim.
Width & Form
Open width (58–60") for cut-and-sew trims. Tubular form for seamless cuffs that eliminate one seam entirely.
