Why Polo Shirt Fabric Is Different
Polo shirt fabric exists for one reason: the collar. A polo collar is a structured, multi-layer component that adds 15–25 grams of fused fabric to the neckline. The body fabric must carry this weight without puckering, drooping, or collapsing. T-shirt fabric (single jersey at 140–180 GSM) cannot do this — sew a polo collar onto a single jersey body and the result is a t-shirt wearing a collar it can't support.
Beyond collar support, polo fabric must deliver dimensional stability (the collar-to-body ratio must stay consistent after 50+ washes), texture identity (piqué's honeycomb pattern or interlock's smooth density must read "polo" not "t-shirt"), and embroidery compatibility (the fabric surface must hold tight stitch definition without puckering — piqué's texture actually helps with this).
Our polo fabric range is built around five constructions, each targeting a specific market segment: cotton piqué (traditional retail, golf, corporate branding), polyester piqué (team sports, promotional, sublimation-ready), interlock (premium smooth hand, executive corporate, high-end retail), CVC blends (school uniforms, bulk corporate, value segment), and performance wicking interlock (athletic polos, golf, gym wear). Every construction is tested for collar-grade stiffness, recovery after 5kg tension load, and shrinkage differential between body and collar zones.

Three Things That Make or Break a Polo Collar
Collar quality is 70% construction technique and 30% fabric. Here's what the fabric must deliver.
Body Weight
The fabric must weigh enough to support the collar without being overpowered. Below 180 GSM, the collar physically weighs too much relative to the body — it pulls the neckline forward, creates a visible "collar shadow" where the body fabric stretches under the collar weight, and the polo sits awkwardly on the body. We set 180 GSM as the absolute floor and recommend 200–220 GSM as the sweet spot where collar and body feel balanced.
Recovery
When a polo collar is folded down, it places continuous tension on the neckline fabric. The fabric must recover — spring back to its original state — when the tension is released. Piqué and interlock have excellent recovery due to their double-knit structure. Single jersey has poor recovery and will permanently stretch at the collar junction after a few wears, causing the collar to sit forward instead of lying flat against the chest.
Shrinkage Match
The body fabric and the collar interlining shrink at different rates. If body fabric shrinks more than the collar (common with untreated cotton), the collar puckers and ripples after the first wash. If the collar shrinks more, it pulls the neckline tight. We pre-shrink all polo fabrics to under 3% and match the collar interlining shrinkage rate to the body fabric within 0.5% — this eliminates differential shrinkage as a failure mode entirely.

Controlled Shrinkage
Pre-shrunk to under 3% with collar-to-body shrinkage matched within 0.5% — eliminates the puckering and rippling that kills cheap polo shirts after the first wash.
Body Without Bulk
180–240 GSM provides enough substance to support a collar without the heaviness of a fleece or sweatshirt fabric — the "just right" weight for a structured yet comfortable shirt.
Wrinkle Camouflage
Piqué's textured surface breaks up light reflection, making wrinkles far less visible than on smooth fabrics like interlock or jersey — polos look presentable straight out of a drawer.
Placket Compatibility
Piqué and interlock have the density to support a button placket without the fabric rippling around the placket edges — a problem with lighter knits.
Shape Retention
After 50 wash cycles, a proper polo fabric maintains its original dimensions and silhouette — cheap fabrics bag at the collar, stretch at the shoulders, and lose their structured shape.

Embroidery
The definitive polo decoration method. Piqué's raised cord texture creates natural stitch channels that hold embroidery definition with exceptional crispness. The texture actually makes the embroidery look more dimensional than on smooth fabrics. Works on all five polo fabric constructions. No color limit, survives 100+ washes, and is the decoration method customers expect on a polo shirt. Anything else looks like a cost-cutting compromise.

All-Over Sublimation
Only possible on polyester piqué or polyester interlock — cotton cannot be sublimated. Enables unlimited colors, photographic detail, and full-coverage designs that make each polo unique. Increasingly popular for team sports, tournament merchandise, and event polos where visual impact matters more than premium hand feel. The sublimated piqué retains its texture, so it still reads as a polo shirt even with wild all-over designs.

Screen Printing
Works but with a significant caveat on piqué: the textured surface causes uneven ink coverage — ink sits on the raised cords but settles into the valleys, creating a slightly "dotted" appearance. This is acceptable for large, simple designs and promotional polos where cost is the priority. On interlock polo fabric, screen printing works much better due to the smooth surface. We recommend screen printing only when the design is too large or complex for embroidery to be cost-effective.
