MMA fabrics are a specialized class of high-performance stretch textiles engineered specifically for the extreme physical demands of mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and grappling. They must withstand intense friction, pulling, and twisting that would destroy standard sportswear in a single session.

Below 180 GSM is not recommended for MMA — the knit structure is too loose and will snag on fingers and tear under grappling pressure. For competition rash guards, 180–210 GSM with high nylon content provides the best balance of durability and mobility.

Polyester-spandex (88/12) is a more affordable alternative for training, but nylon-spandex is the clear choice for competition gear.
MMA fabric is engineered for ground combat. It has higher tear strength (resists gripping and pulling), superior abrasion resistance (survives mat friction without pilling), and a tighter knit structure that prevents fingers from catching. Regular gym fabric prioritizes breathability and lightness, but will pill, tear, or stretch out permanently under grappling conditions. MMA fabric also uses higher spandex content (12–20%) for the compression fit required in no-gi grappling.
It depends on the base fiber. Polyester-spandex MMA fabrics (88/12) can be sublimated using our low-temperature process (195°C, 15–20 seconds), though colors will be slightly muted. Nylon-spandex fabrics — which are the majority of high-end MMA fabrics — cannot be effectively sublimated because nylon does not accept sublimation dye. For nylon-based gear, screen printing with stretch ink or heat transfer labels are the recommended methods.
Yes, significantly. The tight knit structure and slick surface of quality MMA fabric (especially nylon-spandex) creates a barrier between the skin and the mat, allowing the fabric to slide rather than grip the surface. While no fabric eliminates mat burn entirely under extreme friction, a proper nylon-spandex rash guard reduces it by 80–90% compared to bare skin or loose cotton. The key is the fabric must be compression-fit — loose fabric bunches and catches, actually worsening friction.
Cold water only (30°C max), gentle cycle. Do NOT use fabric softener — it coats the fibers, clogs moisture-wicking channels, and significantly reduces the fabric's slick surface (making you easier to grip). Hang dry or tumble dry on absolutely no heat. Wash immediately after training to prevent bacteria from embedding in the fibers. Never wash MMA gear with velcro or items with sharp edges that can snag the spandex. With proper care, a quality rash guard lasts 12–18 months of regular training.
Choose nylon-spandex for: competition gear, any gi/no-gi grappling, rash guards, and spats where durability and slickness matter most. Choose polyester-spandex for: training gear, fight shorts (where sublimation is often desired for complex designs), walkout jackets, and team gear where budget is a bigger factor than peak performance. Many brands use both: nylon-spandex for the rash guard and poly-spandex for the matching fight shorts to allow sublimated panel designs on the shorts.
Fight shorts should be 250–320 GSM. Lighter than this and they lack the structure to prevent riding up during grappling. Heavier shorts (280–320 GSM) are preferred for competition because they hold their shape better during ground work and provide a more substantial feel. The shorts also need a lower spandex content (8–10%) than rash guards — too much stretch in shorts causes them to shift and catch on the mat or opponent.
