What Is Linen Fabric?

Linen is a woven fabric made from the cellulose fibers of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum) — one of the strongest natural fibers known. Unlike cotton, which is a seed fiber, linen is extracted from the stem of the flax plant through a process called retting, then spun into yarn and woven on looms. The result is a fabric with a distinctive natural texture, subtle luster, and exceptional coolness.

Zero Stretch

Linen is the most breathable natural fabric available — it absorbs up to 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, dries quickly, and is naturally cool to the touch due to hollow flax fibers. For summer golf shirts, cricket whites, tennis polos, and resort wear, linen outperforms cotton and polyester in heat comfort. The natural wrinkled look is even considered part of its aesthetic in premium sportswear.
Linen fibers have very low elasticity — they don't bounce back from bending like cotton or polyester does. When the fabric is folded, creased, or compressed during wear, the fibers stay in the bent position permanently. This is inherent to the flax fiber itself and cannot be fully eliminated. Our wrinkle-resistant finish reduces wrinkling by 40–50%, and linen-cotton or linen-poly blends wrinkle significantly less than 100% linen.
Yes, but not with sublimation. Linen is a natural cellulose fiber, so sublimation dye does not bond to it at all. Screen printing with plastisol or water-based inks works very well and is the most reliable method. DTG (direct-to-garment) works best on linen-cotton blends where cotton fibers help absorb the water-based inks. Embroidery also produces excellent results on linen's stable woven structure.
100% linen shrinks approximately 3–5% on the first wash, similar to cotton. We pre-wash and pre-shrink all linen fabric before shipping, which reduces residual shrinkage to under 2%. Importantly, linen actually becomes softer and more pliable with each wash — it's one of the few fabrics that genuinely improves with laundering rather than degrading.
For pure heat comfort, yes — linen is objectively cooler, more breathable, and absorbs more moisture than cotton. However, cotton is softer from the first wear, wrinkles less, costs less, and is more widely available. The best choice depends on your brand positioning: linen for premium, luxury summer collections where coolness and natural aesthetics command higher prices; cotton for all-season, mass-market basics.
Both are natural bast fibers from plant stems, but they come from different plants. Linen comes from flax (Linum usitatissimum) and is softer, more flexible, and more comfortable against skin. Ramie comes from the ramie plant (Boehmeria nivea) and is stiffer, shinier, and more brittle. Ramie is sometimes sold as "linen-like" but doesn't have linen's softness or drape.
