What Is Elastane Fabric?

Elastane (universally known as spandex) is a polyurethane-polyurea copolymer that can stretch 400–700% and recover to near-original dimensions. In sportswear, elastane is never used as a standalone fabric — it's blended with polyester at 2–8% by weight to add stretch, comfort, and compression without sacrificing the durability, printability, and moisture-wicking of the polyester.

The critical nuance is that elastane itself cannot be sublimated — the spandex fibers reject dye and appear as white streaks on dark backgrounds. This means sublimated garments with spandex require careful pattern engineering to keep spandex out of print zones. When done correctly, the result is a garment that prints flawlessly on 92%+ of the surface while providing professional-grade stretch where it matters.

The sublimation issue is real but solvable. We provide detailed pattern guidelines showing exactly where to place spandex strips so they fall in non-printed zones. For garments that must be fully sublimated, our 88/12 low-spandex fabric minimizes visible streaking. For compression wear where the entire surface must be printed, we use 100% polyester (no spandex) with mechanical stretch engineered into the garment panels.

This is the most common stretch ratio for sportswear because it provides 15–25% stretch with 95%+ recovery — enough for compression fit, mobility, and comfort without overstretching or losing shape over time. At 8%, spandex, the fabric has enough stretch for comfortable on/off and athletic movement while maintaining its structure and print quality.
With a critical caveat: spandex fibers cannot be sublimated — they reject dye and appear as white streaks on dark backgrounds. This is the #1 cause of print defects in sublimated sportswear. The solution is pattern engineering: placing spandex strips in non-printed zones (side panels, underarm gussets, waistbands) so they fall outside the print area. For garments that must be fully sublimated with stretch, we use 88/12 low-spandex fabric that minimizes visible streaking to near-invisible levels, and for pure sublimation garments we engineer stretch into the garment panels during sewing — adding real stretch without spandex in the fabric itself.

However, for summer evenings, air-conditioned gyms, and as fashion/lifestyle pieces, 92/8 garments are extremely popular year-round. Streetwear brands like Nike, Adidas, and independent labels use 180–240 GSM spandex blends for their signature heavy-weight products. For summer performance (running, football, basketball), 120–160 GSM is more appropriate.

The GSM refers to the total poly-elastane blend, not the elastane alone. A 180 GSM 92/8 fabric contains only about 14gsm of actual elastane — the rest is polyester. For compression tights and heavy hoodies: 200–240 GSM. For training tees and lightweight track jackets: 150–180 GSM. The higher the GSM, the more body and structure the garment has. For pure compression tights (running, cycling): 180–220 GSM for optimal compression opacity and durability.
Yes — on interlock and interlock surfaces, 92/8 fabric provides an excellent embroidery surface with plenty of grip for stitches. On mesh, the open holes make embroidery difficult. For garments where embroidery is the primary decoration, we recommend interlock or double jersey surfaces with spandex strips placed in non-printed zones. The embroidery quality on spandex-containing fabric is excellent when the design avoids mesh areas.
