What Is Elastane Fabric?
Elastane (universally known as spandex) is a polyurethane-polyurea copolymer that can stretch 400–700% and recover to near-original dimensions. In sportswear, elastane is never used as a standalone fabric — it's blended with polyester at 2–8% by weight to add stretch, comfort, and compression without sacrificing the durability, printability, and moisture-wicking of the polyester.
The critical nuance is that elastane itself cannot be sublimated — the spandex fibers reject dye and appear as white streaks on dark backgrounds. This means sublimated garments with spandex require careful pattern engineering to keep spandex out of print zones. When done correctly, the result is a garment that prints flawlessly on 92%+ of the surface while providing professional-grade stretch where it matters.

Printing Methods with Elastane
The sublimation issue is real but manageable — with the right approach, results are flawless.

Sublimation (Managed)
With proper spandex placement, sublimation on 92%+ polyester areas looks flawless. The key is placing elastic strips strategically in side panels, underarm gussets, and waistbands where they won't be visible in the design. We provide placement diagrams and guidelines with every order so your sublimation partner knows exactly where the spandex goes.

Screen Printing
Works well on the polyester portion of 92/8 fabric — ideal for basic logos, numbers, and simple graphics on training and casual wear. The spandex areas receive screen ink normally (they don't sublimate anyway). Best for non-sublimated product lines where cost efficiency matters more than all-over print quality.

Heat Transfer / DTF
Ideal for individual player numbers on compression tights and small-batch orders. DTF works on any poly-elastane blend regardless of spandex placement. Used for individual customization without screen setup costs. The adhesive bonds to both fiber types — works on the smooth outer surface of the fabric. Perfect for individual athlete numbering and small custom runs.
