What Is CVC Fabric?

CVC (Chief Value Cotton) is a blended fabric where the majority component is cotton — typically 60% cotton and 40% polyester. The critical engineering feature that separates true CVC from a generic blend is the yarn placement: the cotton yarn is woven or knitted to form the outer surface (technical face), while the polyester yarn is positioned on the inner surface (technical back).

"CVC isn't a compromise in the negative sense — it's an engineered optimization. You get the surface that consumers touch and see made entirely of cotton, backed by the structural skeleton of polyester. It shrinks less, wrinkles less, costs less, and lasts longer than pure cotton. For commercial garments, it's often the smartest fabric choice on the table."

This construction means that when you print on CVC, the ink bonds with cotton fibers on the surface — producing the same rich, opaque results as 100% cotton. Meanwhile, the polyester back acts as a structural anchor that prevents the cotton from shrinking, wrinkling, or tearing as easily.

The rule of thumb: If you're screen printing and want a cotton feel — use CVC. If you're sublimating and want polyester performance with a touch of softness — use TC. They are NOT interchangeable. Our mitigation: All CVC fabric receives anti-pill treatment at no extra cost to prevent surface balling. For brands that need sublimation but want the CVC aesthetic, we recommend TC (65/35 poly-cotton) with a bio-polish finish that softens the synthetic hand feel. For maximum softness on a blend, we offer a 70/30 CVC (more cotton, slightly less stability) as a custom option. Pre-shrinking is applied by default, reducing shrinkage to under 1.5%.

TC (Tetron Cotton) is typically 65% polyester / 35% cotton — polyester is on the outside, so it feels more synthetic but CAN be sublimated. They serve completely different markets: CVC for printed cotton-feel garments (polos, corporate tees), TC for sublimated sportswear (baseball jerseys, all-over print). Ordering TC when you need CVC (or vice versa) is the #1 blend mistake we see — they are absolutely not interchangeable.
No — standard CVC cannot be effectively sublimated, and this is by design. In CVC construction, the 40% polyester is intentionally placed on the BACK of the fabric. Since dye-sublimation only bonds to polyester fibers on the surface, and the surface of CVC is 60% cotton, the sublimation dye has nothing to bond with and will wash out almost completely. If you need sublimation on a blend fabric, you need TC (65/35 poly-cotton) where the polyester is on the face, not CVC. We always verify your intended decoration method before production to prevent this costly mistake.

CVC piqué is arguably the #1 fabric for commercial polo shirts worldwide — it's what most corporate, golf, and school polo shirts are made from. The piqué construction gives the textured waffle look that polos are known for, the cotton face takes embroidery beautifully, and the polyester back means the collar doesn't stretch out and the shirt doesn't shrink after washing. If you're buying polos for any commercial purpose — corporate uniforms, events, golf, schools — CVC piqué at 200–240 GSM is almost certainly the correct choice.
On the outside (the face), CVC feels very similar to cotton — soft, slightly warm, with a natural texture. Most consumers cannot distinguish CVC from 100% cotton by touch alone. On the inside (the back), there is a slightly smoother, more synthetic feel if you pay close attention, but this surface is against the body and not typically noticed during wear. The overall perception is "this is a nice cotton shirt" — the polyester component is felt as structural benefits (less wrinkly, holds shape) rather than as a synthetic texture. If you need the inside to also feel like pure cotton, then CVC isn't the right choice — you need 100% cotton.
