Different Types of Printing Methods in Sportswear

From sublimation to screen printing, discover the best techniques to brand your athletic apparel for maximum durability and style.

Branding is the heartbeat of sportswear. Whether it's a team logo on a basketball jersey or a complex all-over pattern on yoga leggings, the printing method determines the look, feel, and longevity of the garment.

At Dhalay International, we utilize a variety of decoration techniques. Choosing the right one depends on your fabric choice, design complexity, and budget. Here is the breakdown.

Sublimation Printing
Best For: Polyester
Sublimated sportswear pattern

Sublimation is the gold standard for modern synthetic sportswear. It uses heat to turn dye into a gas that bonds directly with polyester fibers. Because the ink becomes part of the fabric, it doesn't sit on top.

Pros
  • Unlimited colors and gradients (Photo-realistic).
  • Print is permanent; won't crack, peel, or fade.
  • Doesn't block breathability of the fabric.
  • Great for "All-Over Print" designs.
Cons
  • Only works on white/light polyester fabrics.
  • Cannot be used on cotton or dark garments.
  • Setup costs can be higher for small runs.
Screen Printing
Best For: Cotton Blends
Screen printing squeegee

The traditional method where ink is pushed through a mesh stencil onto the fabric. Each color requires a separate screen. It creates a vibrant, slightly raised surface.

Pros
  • Extremely durable and crack-resistant.
  • Vibrant colors, especially on dark fabrics.
  • Cost-effective for large batch orders.
Cons
  • Not ideal for stretchy performance fabrics (can crack).
  • Limited number of colors (each adds cost).
  • Heavy ink feel can reduce breathability ("plastic" feel).
Heat Transfer / Vinyl
Best For: Names & Numbers
Heat press machine

A design is cut from colored vinyl (or printed onto a transfer sheet) and heat-pressed onto the garment. This is the industry standard for putting individual player names and numbers on team jerseys.

Pros
  • Perfect for personalization (1-off names/numbers).
  • Great for crisp, small text and logos.
  • Durable on a wide variety of fabrics.
Cons
  • Can feel "heavy" or sticky on the skin.
  • Not suitable for complex, multi-color all-over designs.
  • Edges may peel over time if not applied correctly.

Comparison Matrix

Method Fabric Compatibility Durability Breathability Best Use Case
Sublimation 100% Polyester (Light) Permanent (Lifecycle) High (Ink bonds to fiber) Cycling jerseys, Running kits, Complex patterns
Screen Print Cotton / Poly-Cotton High Low (Blocks airflow) T-shirts, Hoodies, Simple logos
Heat Transfer Most Fabrics Medium Medium Player names, Numbers, Small logos
Embroidery Most Fabrics Very High Low (Adds weight) Polos, Caps, Corporate Branding

Which Method Should You Choose?

If you are creating a high-performance basketball uniform where breathability is key, Sublimation is the clear winner. If you are creating a gym merch line with heavy cotton hoodies, Screen Printing offers the best value and look.
